Serving healthy food to your family is challenging, especially when you are on a low budget. We have low cost meals for people on a budget with cost saving ideas and budget recipes. They are all healthy eating ideas and are cheap to prepare. Change the recipes to suit your family's tastes and the ingredients you have. Cutting costs on food doesn't mean you have to cut on quality. It's still possible to prepare meals that not only taste great, but are also good for you.
SlowCooker Recipes NZ - easy slowcooker recipes!

The slowcooker is simple, safe and requires no attention while cooking. Simply place all the food ingredients in the slowcooker, set the slowcooker on low. By the time you come home, a tasty, nutritious, home-cooked dish will be waiting for you. Add a salad or whole-grain bread to the dish and it will form a complete meal. The natural juices from the meats and vegetables are retained in the slowcooker pot rather than boiled away, thus, resulting in tasty and nutritious dishes.


APRICOT CHICKEN RECIPE
6 - 8 chicken pieces
1 onion sliced into rings
1 tin of apricots plus juice
3/4 glass water
1 1/2 tspns chicken stock powder
Cook on HIGH for 1 hour, then turn down to LOW and cook for 5 hours. Thicken it an hour before dishing up, with a little corn flour and water. Comment: Try pineapple or peaches for a change

BARBECUED PORK RECIPE
1kg boneless pork top loin
1 chopped onion
3/4 can diet soda (Beer might work just as well)
3/4 cup barbecue sauce
 
Combine all ingredients in a crockpot. Cook covered on high for 5-6 hours or until meat is very tender. Drain and slice or shred pork. 

BEEF CURRY RECIPE
2kg diced stewing steak
½ cup flour
¼ cup vegetable oil
2 large onion, diced, 1 cup beef stock
¼ cup curry powder, or to taste
¼ cup tomato paste
4 medium potatoes, quartered
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Dust beef in flour, shaking off excess. Heat oil in a large frypan and cook beef in batches until brown. Remove and place in slow cooker. Heat remaining oil, cook onion 2-3 minutes or until softened. Add curry powder and cook until fragrant. Transfer to slow cooker with remaining ingredients. Cover and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours or HIGH for 3-4 hours. Season to taste and serve with cooked basmati rice. 

BEEF ROAST RECIPE
2 kg beef roast
1 can beer
1 packet onion soup mix
Trim the fat from the Roast. Put the Roast into the crockpot and sprinkle with soup mix. Pour beer over the top and cook on low for about 8 hours. 

BEEF STROGANOFF RECIPE
2 kg cheap steak, cut into thin strips
1/3 cup olive oil
¼ cup flour
½ cup tomato paste
1 cup beef stock
500g mushrooms, sliced
300 ml sour cream
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
 
Dust beef in flour, shaking off excess flour. Heat oil in a large frying pan and cook beef in batches until brown. Remove and place in slow cooker. Add remaining ingredients, except sour cream. Cover and cook on HIGH 3-4 hours or LOW 6-8 hours.
In the last 30 minutes of cooking, stir through sour cream.  

CHINESE HOTPOT RECIPE
450 grams mince
2 cups water
1/2 a cabbage
1 onion
1 packet chicken noodle soup
3 desert spoons rice
3 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon curry powder
 
Cook in slow cooker on low setting for 6 hours with mince on bottom stir once near end.

CORNED BEEF RECIPE
1.5kg corn silverside
1 onion sliced chopped finely
10 peppercorns
2 bay leaves (Optional)
2 tablespoons raw sugar
(Try Golden Syrup)
Place silverside in cooker cover with water then add remaining ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high 4-6 hours.

HANGI RECIPE
smoked bacon hock (pref Manuka smoked)
chicken pieces
beef pieces
pork pieces
small onions
potatoes ,kumara, pumpkin, cabbage
a very small amount of water
 
Place all in the crock pot placing the cabbage leaves on top. Cook on high for the first 2hrs and then on low for another 3hrs.

HAWAIIAN SAUSAGE RECIPE
6 sausages
1 large onion, peeled and chopped
2 large tomatoes
8 oz tin pineapple pieces and juice
1 Tblspn worcestor sauce
1 Tblspn tomato sauce
1 Tblspn vinegar.
Put chopped onions and sliced tomatoes into crock pot and add sausages. Add the rest of ingredients.
Cook on HIGH for 2 hours, then LOW for 2/3 hours

LAMB CASSEROLE RECIPE
500 gm lamb steaks - cut into 2cm cubes
1 peeled, chopped onion
2 chopped sticks celery
1 can of tomatoes
1 cup hot water
1 tspn beef stock.
 
Cook on LOW 8 hours.

PORK CHOPS RECIPE
4 pork chops
1 can peaches in juice
2 carrots, peeled and sliced
1 onion peeled and chopped
Layer carrots and onion on bottom of crock pot. Add pork chops and pour over peaches and juice.
Cook on LOW, 6/8 hours.

MUSHROOM CHICKEN RECIPE
3 whole chicken breasts halved
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 can mushrooms, sliced
1/4 cup dry white wine
salt and pepper 
Place the chicken pieces into the crockpot then season with salt and pepper. Mix wine and soup together then pour over the chicken. Add mushrooms then cover and cook the Chicken in Mushroom Gravy on low for 7 to 9 hours or high 3 to 4 hours.
Recipe may be doubled and cooked in a 5 quart crockpot.

POT ROAST RECIPE
2.5 kg pot roast
2 cans condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 packet onion soup mix
300 ml water
 
In a slow cooker, mix cream of mushroom soup, onion soup mix and water. Place pot roast in slow cooker and coat with soup mixture. Cook on High setting for 3 to 4 hours, or on low setting for 8 to 9 hours.

SAUSAGE AND BEER RECIPE
8-10 Sausages.
Tin of budget tomatoes.
Onion chopped.
Bottle of beer
Salt and pepper
Brown sausages and put in slow cooker dish add all other ingredients. Cook all day in slow cooker.
Serve with mashed potatoes and green veges

SAUSAGE CASSEROLE RECIPE
8 Sausage
1 large onion
6 flat mushrooms
1 cup hot water
1x35grm Mushrom soup
1/4 cup orange juice
6 medium potatoes
Cut up sausages and put into crock pot. Chop up the onions and mushrooms and add to sausages. Pour the hot water over mushroom soup mix in a bowl and add sherry/orange juice and pour over sausage mixture. Peel potatoes and slice finely, and add. Make sure potatoes are submerged in the liquid. Cook on LOW 6-8 hours.
